Hardline Ex- Lawmaker José Antonio Kast Elected as Chile's Incoming Leader.

In a decisive second-round vote, hardline figure José Antonio Kast has secured the presidency in Chile.

A Resounding Victory

After more than 99% of ballots counted, Kast secured 58.17% of the vote, defeating leftist candidate Jeannette Jara, who obtained 41.83%.

This marks Kast's third presidency, having previously been beaten by the incumbent president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 runoff.

Campaign Centered On Security and Migration

Noted for his strong Catholic views and regard for the period of dictator Augusto Pinochet, Kast's electoral bid was primarily focused on promises to combat rising violence and significantly reduce immigration.

He consistently blamed foreigners, especially the approximately 330,000 undocumented individuals in Chile, for public safety problems. Throughout the election cycle, he delivered an stern warning for them to depart before the March 11 handover or face removal.

His plans featured U.S.-style measures such as building camps, barriers, electric fences, and increasing the army presence on the northern border.

Within a Regional Trend

Several commentators see Kast's victory as aligning with a broader rightward wave in the region, similar to recent electoral wins in countries like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.

However, other pundits also frame it as a continuation of the established rotation of power between left and right leadership since Chile's return to democracy in 1990.

Governing Lacking a Clear Mandate

In spite of his decisive popular vote triumph, Kast will not have an absolute majority in parliament, not in the lower house or the Senate, even if various right-leaning parties are grouped together.

This legislative situation may challenge his policy goals, including a vow to cut public spending by $6 billion within a year and a half—a proposal for which he has not detailed concrete steps.

"There are several things about how a Kast government will be that we don't know because he has not said the way he will achieve them," noted a political expert.

The expert stated, "In terms of the economy, it is almost certain we will see adjustment measures associated with the right. But the area with far less doubt is on law and order, because that has been his flagship issue across the race."
