Information Available Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Shooting

At least 16 people perished and more than 40 were hurt when assailants shot at a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian authorities are describing as a act of terrorism.

In the latest update, authorities have confirmed the number of fatalities stands at 16, which includes one of the alleged gunmen. Furthermore, 42 injured people were taken to the hospital.

The victims have not yet been publicly named, but authorities state their ages are from 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Reportedly a father of five children, he worked as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and friends spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member asked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.

She described the moments leading up to the attack, explaining they had been standing together when the gunfire erupted. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.

The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having endured unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Publicly, the Foreign Minister declared that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the message continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was among those killed in the incident, as per reports referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number remain under care, with a number in a critical state. The injured include two police officers who attended the scene.

A wounded man is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Hailed as a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Sources state he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the response of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the attack. He described he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
