Jailhouse Surprise: Brazil's Ex-President Bolsonaro Confronts Time Behind Bars
He battled justice and justice won.
Two months subsequent to being handed a 27-year sentence for seeking to “destroy” the nation's democracy, ex-president Jair Bolsonaro at last looks jail-bound.
Imminent Jailing
The adjudicated plotter – who had been living under residential detention in his estate while a number of legal procedures and appeals play out – is widely expected to be incarcerated in the near future, during growing talk that he will be moved to a notorious high-security facility.
Previous Comments on Prisoners
Throughout Bolsonaro’s long public life, the far-right ex- paratrooper exhibited little mercy for Brazil’s jailed individuals.
“What’s the need to give those scoundrels a good life?” he once pondered. “They deserve to be messed, full-fucking-stop. That's my opinion.”
In another instance, Bolsonaro stated: “If you don’t want to finish there, all you have to do is not rape, kidnap or theft.”
Jail Facility Debate
Yet the possibility of Bolsonaro himself winding up in the Papuda top-security prison in Brasília has shocked allies, four of whom this week inspected the prison in an apparent effort to discourage the judiciary from transferring him there.
The senator, a senator from Bolsonaro’s allied group who was one of the visitors, stated he expected the elderly politician to be jailed in the following week and a half and worried his assigned prison could be Papuda.
The senator argued Bolsonaro’s acute intestinal issues – the consequence of a almost deadly knife attack during the last political campaign – meant it would be dangerous to keep the ex-leader there. “His [health] situation is highly critical. He will not be able to handle it if they take him to Papuda … It could be terrible,” he added, who also worried about overcrowded cells and the condition of prison meals.
During his tour Papuda, Lucas remembered seeing cells containing forty prisoners: “That’s practically one square metre per inmate.
“We spoke to the convicts and they complain, of course, of the terrible food,” remarked the senator.
Allies Voice Concerns
He is not the sole person voicing opinions ahead of the one-time head of state's predicted imprisonment.
Writing in a leading newspaper, one more backer, the former cabinet member Fábio Wajngarten, lamented the “harsh” finale to Bolsonaro’s “spotless” political career and asserted Brazil was about to experience “the biggest political injustice in its past”.
“This is an injustice that erodes the spirits of millions Brazilian citizens,” he stated.
Mixed General Response
It is possibly true due to the considerable support Bolsonaro retains on the Brazilian right. However his expected jailing has also gladdened the spirits of millions other people who believe he should be jailed for conspiring to stop the incoming president from taking power – and also scheming to have him killed.
Reimont Otoni, a representative for the current administration's Workers’ party, commented: “Not a soul desires Bolsonaro to be put in a dark cell. Not a soul wishes Bolsonaro to be put in isolation. No one wants Bolsonaro to go hungry or for him to have to sleep on the floor. We want him to obtain dignified handling – but dignified treatment while incarcerated. He cannot continue being his self-appointed guard for his whole life.”
The congressman noted how Bolsonaro backers, who have spent years praising the harsh treatment of convicts, had suddenly woken up to their privileges. “Recently has the conservative fringe – which has repeatedly claimed that human rights are not for criminals – opted to visit a prison to discover what situations are actually like,” he stated.
“He is a lawbreaker,” he affirmed, but that did not mean he earned “degrading, demeaning handling”.
Likely Jail Facilities
In spite of rumors that Bolsonaro could be sent to Papuda, which presently houses about thousands of prisoners, his expected destination appears to be a close penitentiary for officers and other “unique” inmates known as Papudinha (Minor Papuda).
His potential cell are much more pleasant than those in the larger jail, although nevertheless a far cry from the opulence Bolsonaro experienced while living in the impressive official residence, approximately 12 miles away.
As per sources, the room Bolsonaro could anticipate inhabit in Papudinha measures about 24 sq metres – roughly the area of vehicle spaces – and includes a 12 square meter bathroom with a shower and a 130 square foot veranda. “The ex-president might be authorized to have a set and even a minibar in his cell as long as they were provided by his family,” information suggested.
Political Responses
The lawmaker condemned the talked-about proposal to send the former leader to Papuda as “a type of retaliation” on the part of the presiding magistrate who presided over Bolsonaro’s coup trial and will decide his fate in the {
