Forecasters are saying a frosty start to the new year, with wintry precipitation anticipated throughout a lot of the UK. Those celebrating are advised to wrap up as bitterly cold temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.

Celebratory Events Proceed Despite Alerts

The Scottish capital's iconic Hogmanay celebrations are expected to go ahead, following last year's calling-off. This is in spite of advisories for snow across northern Scotland.

"A cold New Year's Eve evening for those who are celebrating, so warmer clothes will be essential," said the weather service.

Displays Under Clear but Chilly Skies

Across the UK, the weather is expected to be perfect for fireworks shows, with dry conditions and clear skies. Temperatures are due to be low, meaning extra layers vital, according to forecasters.

To the north, skies will be more overcast, but this is unlikely to affect visibility for watching fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.

Extensive Advisories for Friday

Moving into Friday, snow alerts have been issued for Northern Ireland and from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and the majority of the south-east of England.

• Travelers are advised to leave additional time for trips on the road.
• Disruptions and cancellations are expected on trains and buses.

Readings Forecast to Drop Even More

With the start of 2026, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are set to plummet as snowfall and high winds are expected to affect the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow is forecast to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the highest roads and hills.

Health Advisories Issued

Meanwhile, amber cold health alerts have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to stay active until noon on 5 January, with the mercury forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Officials explained this signified the weather was likely to trigger major effects across health and social care services. This encompasses a likely increase in the fatality numbers among the elderly or unwell or those 65 and older.

The message for all is clear: to see the new year in security, wrapping up warm is utterly paramount.
