The Red Devils Set to Secure Germany Striker Lea Schüller from the Bavarian Giants
The Women's Super League club are finalising completing the signing for prolific German striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Acquisition for United
Schüller, who has six months remaining on her contract, has been a prolific goalscorer for both club and country. Having netted over 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. This signing is viewed as a marquee signing for the WSL team.
Her exit from Bayern has been anticipated since she appeared to be fighting back tears while applauding the German club’s supporters following a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
Reports in December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its top strikers. According to multiple sources, the formalities for the move are now finalised.
Reliable Goalscoring to Boost United's Attack
The experienced striker's arrival is expected to provide a major uplift to United’s attacking options. Schüller has been highly reliable in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.
- For seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She won the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Gathering Steam at Old Trafford
The acquisition of Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when the club seem to be building positive momentum.
Recent on-pitch successes include securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a win in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the mid-season window has brought additional business:
- The acquisition of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The new deal for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since joining in 2023.
Regarding Miyazawa’s extension, a senior figure commented: “She has become a critical part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability allows her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”
Lundkvist, who has arrived from a club in the NWSL, said: “You can feel how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
