This Household Alternative Gaming of the Year Roundup for 2025
Alright, how was the past year in your household? Did it seem truly wonderful as people post on Facebook? Full of A-grades for your offspring and elaborate costume birthday parties for the grownups? Or was it a swamp of disappointment with only sporadic enjoyable flotsam? Could any part be genuine, or have we all become AI-generated synthetic personas with celebrity smiles?
I've corralled the family for a reflection, whether they wanted to or not, to discuss the most important thing in any given year: what titles we enjoyed the most. Let's get started:
Release Oldest Daughter Played the Most
Pikmin
"Is it impossible to pick just one?"
"This isn't my definitive list."
In the mobile realm, she’s been playing Cityscapes and "attempting to locate decent healthcare."
"Virtually?"
"In the actual world."
Game Middle Son Played the Most
Overwatch
"I refuse to play games on my phone." He took umbrage that I even asked. Fair enough.
Game Youngest Daughter Played the Most
Resident Evil Biohazard
She is trying to get into acting, but when she took a break from vocals, she was immersed in Resident Evil. She also elaborated in great detail about her successes on The Sims, where her avatar has a successful utopia with infinitely better healthcare than her big sister has outside the game.
Game the Partner Played the Most
Crash Bandicoot: It’s About Time
She began the year at sixty percent completion and ended it at eighty-two percent. She's in it for the long run not a sprint for her. Her mobile diversion: something called Woodle, where you have to extract pins.
Release I Laughed at My Kids for Still Playing
Minecraft
Whenever I see my adult son playing Minecraft, I set about him like a cross between a persistent critic. When he protests, I reply that I am engaging in this to build character so he can be a man and play games for grownups. This defines our Scottish father/son relationship.
Most Skilled Gaming Family Member This Year
Eldest Daughter on Just Dance 2024
It wasn't even close for this one. She is unstoppable. More impressive than I was at classic rhythm games in my prime.
Game I Played the Most
Marvel Snap
It was in a league of its own to the hours I spent on this exceptionally well-crafted strategy wizard’s poker, with its ever-changing range of cards and game variations.
Title I Wish I Had Played Less
Marvel Snap
The worst thing about games that frequently update their range is you have a moment of clarity and see it is all just an attempt to trap you with compulsion-based microtransactions. So love turned to hate halfway through the year and it went into the bin.
Game I Wish I Had Played More
Doom: The Dark Ages
Glorious reinvention of a classic franchise. Immersive atmosphere from the off. I wish I could deal with my problems so effectively in real life.
Game I Wish I Had Played More (Cerebral Edition)
Blue Prince
I refuse to rush this beautiful, unique game and I just was short on the focused attention to give it what it needed earlier this year. With holiday guests over the festive period, I will be playing this in the wee small hours after family time.
Game That Saved My Soul When I Needed It
Balatro
I'm aware Balatro was 2024’s surprise hit, but I was slow on the uptake. And it is incredible. It just gets every single thing right. Crazy Poker is a fantastic concept, but the effects behind the different special cards are so inventive it has become a game I would happily play any time. Add in the cleverness of the card design, and this is an true peak of gaming. I wouldn't mind being stuck in a elevator for hours just so I have nothing to do but play it.
Title I Got the Most Backlash For Criticising
Outer Worlds 2
I endured a minor pile-on when I mentioned how a glitch in another game soured the experience for me, but that other title is still a massive gaming achievement in terms of production values – which I appreciated even more after slogging through Outer Worlds 2. So thank you to the commenter who took the time to write in to say that my Outer Worlds 2 review was "missing the point". I share that verbatim, because I acknowledge the engagement, and she is obviously an sharp judge of character.
Title Everybody Loved That I Just Didn’t Get
Hollow Knight: Silksong
Alright. Give me a punishingly tough exploration-focused thing and provide little guidance on what I am supposed to be doing, except "explore". Great fun. I understand that it is beautiful and is ideal if you are into challenging games, but I cannot think of a gaming experience I want less of in my mid-fifties. I was around back when most games were like this, and my patience is gone. It was fine when I was a kid, but the same could be said for many outdated things.
Biggest Gaming Controversy of 2025
Close call between corporate partnerships that caused concern, and expensive game releases. Both ethically dubious and unpleasant.
Games I Would Name My Children After, Were I I Was Ever Foolish Enough to Have More
Clair Obscur, Despelote and Bananza would all sound good names bellowed from the back door at bedtime.
Part of My Body That Aches Most From Gaming
Right Thumb Joint. Seriously. I don’t know if it’s because of video games or endless scrolling, but it aches like anything in the mornings now. I knew I should have got my thumbs protected back in the past.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2026
Grand Theft Auto VI.
And it will come out in 2026, even if we have to stretch time until the end of days.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2036
The Witcher 4.
