Why Los Blancos Possess 'Total Confidence' in Teenager Thiago Pitarch
When an teenage creates club history in a pivotal Champions League tie against City, it inevitably draws acclaim and attention.
In only his first start in the competition - and fifth game for the club - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the fifteen-time European champions claimed a three-nil last-16 first leg advantage at the Bernabeu.
The teenager, who also made his Real debut in the qualifying round a month ago with a substitute appearance at Sporting Lisbon, then helped Los Blancos overcome the English Premier League side in the midweek second leg to confirm a quarter-final place.
Aged 18 years old, Pitarch became the club's most youthful starter to start twice in the Champions League knockout stages, beating star Vinicius Jr's previous mark by a week and a half.
A Meteoric Rise Through La Fabrica
The midfielder is the latest to come through from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most exciting protegees.
He joined Madrid from CD Leganes in the summer of 2023, having previously been with Atletico and Getafe academies, and starting out for the Juvenil C team, where he rapidly created a positive impact.
Pitarch worked his way up to the reserve side and it was during a pre-season game in which they faced the academy's first team, then coached by the former defender, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the current Real boss, who took over from the previous coach in January.
Spanish media would later describe the moment as "an instant connection," adding he excelled not only for his skill on the ball, but for the vitality, personality and drive he added to the side.
'His Best Attribute Is His Personality'
During the summer of 2025, ex-manager Xabi Alonso called up Pitarch to train with the first team and gave him playing time during pre-season.
However, it was the change in manager that proved the turning point in his career as he was introduced as a late substitute in both ties against Benfica that set up the meeting with Pep Guardiola's team.
"I've dreamed of this each night before going to bed, the very first time I began playing the game, each day you go to train and every day you play a match," said Pitarch following his debut.
"I have just achieved my ambition with the greatest club in the world and in the best competition."
Handed a starting debut in La Liga against Getafe - where he was for four years after moving from Atletico in 2018 - he has retained his spot for the next four as fitness issues to Jude Bellingham and Ceballos provided an opening.
Pitarch has seized it with displays that have belied his youth and experience.
"He's a extremely fast player, and you can observe what he's capable of," said the coach. "He is extremely dynamic, with excellent stamina, work-rate and mobility."
The player's mindset has also stood out to his coach.
"His greatest quality is his personality," added Arbeloa. "He always wants the ball, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.
"I understand fans might be surprised to watch him start in a Champions League match, but he is selected because I had complete confidence in him to do his normal game.
"Thiago will continue to get chances with the first team. It's a pleasure to have a player like him."
A Future International Decision
Born in Fuenlabrada, in the Madrid region, and was raised deeply involved in Spanish football, progressing through local academies before entering Real Madrid's renowned La Fabrica system.
He possesses dual Moroccan and Spanish nationality, giving him the option to represent both nations at the highest level.
According to Fifa eligibility rules, players may appear for different countries at junior level without being permanently tied, with the final decision only binding once they appear in a competitive full international.
Pitarch has featured for Spain at underage levels, representing both the under-19 and U20 teams, and participated in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where Spain made it to the quarter-finals.
Despite this, he has not yet decided to any full national side, who are watching his rise with keen attention.
In a recent interview, Pitarch confirmed: "I have not taken my final decision yet. Things are great with the Spanish federation, but I will reach a conclusion in the near future."
His situation echoes that of other dual nationality talents such as Real team-mate Diaz and Barca star Yamal. While 18-year-old Lamine chose La Roja, Brahim opted to play for the Atlas Lions.
Eyes on the Prize
For now, Pitarch's focus is on establishing himself in the Real side and repaying Arbeloa's faith.
He featured for over an hour in the 2-1 victory at the Etihad, which sealed a five-one overall triumph and a quarter-final tie with the German champions.
His substitution by another academy player in Angel underscored Arbeloa's trust in the next generation to help the team pursue trophies to come.
After his notable contributions to date on the Champions League, the midfielder is tipped to play a key role in that.
"Arbeloa treats me the same. We deal with it very naturally. I attempt not to overanalyze it excessively - I have to deserve my minutes on the field," he commented following the success at Manchester.
